Andy Sullivan: 2014 Big Dummy Awards

Andy Sullivan

It’s time once again for the annual Big Dummy Awards.  It is here that I celebrate acts of buffoonery throughout the year.  I must start with Toronto Mayor Rob Ford.  During this whole comedy of errors, I said time and again that this would’ve been perfect parody for the late Chris Farley.  Ford was a character himself.  Toronto Mayor from 2010-14, his silliness proved a goldmine for late night kingpins David Letterman, Jay Leno and, later, Jimmy Fallon.  It should be noted that Ford traded in his Mayoral job for a spot on City Council.  Good thing for him the late night kingpins got tired of him.  It did give him some notoriety, though.  It’s always said that any publicity is good publicity.

Nominee #2 as Big Dummy 2014 is Ray Rice.  I won’t go through the whole ordeal, as we’ve all heard the story ad nausea. I could say the same thing about nominee #3, Adrian Peterson.  These guys have the world at their fingertips and almost throw it away in one stupid act.  We remain in the NFL for nominee #4-commisioner Roger Goodell.  As commissioner of any sports league, you oversee not only day to day activities, but every single player in the league.  The disciplinary action, and the leniency of it, is what lands Goodell on this list.

Back in September, the Emperor of Stupidity, Kanye West, refused to continue a Sydney, Australia show until a fan Kanye demanded to stand up, did not.  It should be noted that this fan was wheelchair-bound.  He stopped his show and noted that one fan wouldn’t stand up.  He even got the crowd to chant for the person to stand up.  Kanye then got word that he couldn’t stand up because he was in a wheelchair.  Kanye, you big dummy!

Ford is the first I’ll eliminate.  He’s a first time offender and is already forgotten.  Rice had his NFL suspension lifted, which reflects back on Goodell.  I’m eliminating Rice because he’s a little dummy.  Same goes for Peterson.  We’re down to Roger vs Kanye West.  Aside from being a wrestling match that a bunch of people would actually like to see happen (get on that for WrestleMania 31, WWE) I think Goodell would be a little too businesslike to win a match with West.  He’s cagey, though.  You have to be cagey in business.  West is a businessman himself, an obnoxious one at that.  Kanye might talk Goodell into submission.  I think Roger would say he had better use of his time and just concede. Big Dummy 2014 by forfeit: Kanye West.  Kanye “Big Dummy” West sounds fitting, don’t you think? Say it with me in true Fred G. Sanford fashion: Kanye, you big dummy!
