Against The Grain by: Andy Sullivan

I once did a column about packing hacks.  I added in little helpful hints to give you more room in your travel bag such as: roll your t-shirts, socks and underwear into a tight roll like a burrito.  What I’ll cover today is your travel bag.

Years ago, I bought a pretty sizeable Champion duffle bag. It’s spacious so it fits any clothes you’d need for any duration you’ll be away.  I’ll often wear one pair of jeans for two days.  Say I knew I’d be gone 4 days.  I’d take two pairs of jeans and 4 of everything else.  As I said in a previous column, roll your shirts (if they’re tees or Polo shirts).  Same with socks and underwear.  Rolling them up and placing them in the corner of your bag not only safely stores your shirts, socks and underwear.  It also gives you plenty of room in your bag for other items.

A few weeks ago, I was in Beverly Hills Boutique and saw this green Cabela’s bag for cheap.  I thought “wow! This is a steal”! I soon found out why it was inexpensive.  The zipper gets stuck and won’t close completely without a pretty good tug-o-war.  My final diagnosis was, “hey, it closes enough.  If it left a wide gap where something could fall out, that’d be different”.  I usually just put my phone, Apple Watch and iPad charging cords in it anyway.

You also will need a good bathroom bag for your toothbrush and related items.  I’ve got a Land’s End bag I’ve had for years.  It’s a small-ish rectangular bag that you can easily fit into your duffle.  Finally, it’s helpful to stick a sweatshirt or hoodie in your bag.  If it won’t fit, wear it so you’ll have it with you.  If you’re like me, you can get multiple days out of a pair of jeans as well as a hoodie.  And make sure you take an extra shirt, underwear or two because, well you never know.  That could be a motto for life, couldn’t it? Always have clean underwear.
