Against The Grain by: Andy Sullivan

Self-care is one of the most important things you can do for yourself.  “Self” is in the name so you know it’s important for your well-being.  When something isn’t good for you personally or when you get tired of something you’re doing, get rid of it.  It’s like Kelly Clarkson says at the end of her talk show everyday: have a great day and if it’s not great, just change it.  I hadn’t been having great days lately and I pinpointed the reason: Facebook.  I came to that conclusion a few years ago and I left that site for about a year.  Best. Year. Ever!

I was feeling that way again at the end of 2019 and the beginning of 2020. Guess what I did? Sunday night before I went to bed, I logged out of Facebook.  As I write this, I’m on my second full day sans FB.  Honestly, it feels great! Now I’m wondering what other toxic habit I can cut out in 2020.

I’ve always liked Instagram better anyway.  You take a picture, post it and then you’re out.  Twitter is a bit of a cesspool if you get caught up in the childish drama.  It’s that way with anything, though.  And another thing: close your DM’s and inbox.  My DM’s(that’s direct message for the uninitiated) basically get visited by weirdos or spam accounts who promptly get blocked.

Knowing when to step back doesn’t just apply to social media.  Toxic relationship? Step back and take stock.  Take a break if you need.  If you have a toxic relationship, you need to get out.  Take it from me.  You only need to be in one of those.  You’ll never forget the experience (not in a good way).

If you have something that you’ve been thinking about dumping or adding, January of a new year is the perfect time to do it.  I wouldn’t call it a New Year’s Resolution, though.  We tend to go back on our resolutions after a few weeks (if that). I’ll stick with self-care.
