Against The Grain by: Andy Sullivan

There are a few shows I can watch at any time; no matter how many times I’ve seen the repeats.  Big Bang Theory has quickly become one of those shows.  Another one of those shows is Seinfeld.  The show had its series finale 16 years ago, but I still watch it whenever I stumble upon it.

The series debuted July 5, 1989.  Yes, back then, series’ debuted in the summer.  The show began as the Seinfeld Chronicles.  The pilot episode was met with poor reviews.  As a result, NBC passed on the show.  NBC executive Rick Ludwin believed the series had potential.  He gave the series the budget to create four more episodes, which formed season one and began airing on May 31, 1990.  The first season is considered the smallest sitcom order in television history.

During its 9 season run, 180 episodes were produced.  The count includes both halves of three one-hour episodes, including the finale, highlights show and a clip show that aired before the finale.  The final episode aired May 14, 1998.  All seasons are on DVD and repeats air all the time.

I can quote Seinfeld and dominate Seinfeld trivia like nobody’s business.  I even remember who Bob Sacamano is (Kramer’s friend we never saw).  I can recite Kramer’s “pants story” word for word.  To be fair, it wasn’t a long story.  I can even tell you about lesser name characters like Mr. Pitt and J. Peterman (Elaine’s bosses).  I know opposite day and the Summer of George.  You could say I’m a super fan.

I quickly became that way with Big Bang Theory.  I can name all the main characters.  I even have their bobble-heads (except for Amy Farrah Fowler-I need to get that one).  I identify a little bit with Leonard, Sheldon, Raj and Howard. They’re all awkward with women-check.  They’re all smart-I’ve been told I’m smart, so check.  I, however, am not a genius.  That is where I part ways with the guys.  And I could NEVER get a Penny! Of course, Leonard never thought so, either.  The first few seasons of Leonard in that show were my entire four years in high school, as I recall.

Monday September 24, 2007 is when the show premiered.  Ironically, when the 7th season premieres, it moves to Monday for this season’s premiere September 22.  I’ve watched those repeats no matter how many times I’ve seen a particular episode.  There you have it, I’m a Big Bang and Seinfeld geek.  In the coming weeks, I’ll let you in on another show of which I’m becoming a superfan.
