Against The Grain by: Andy Sullivan

There are home remedies for just about everything.  There are your standard water and hold your breath for getting rid of hiccups and things of that sort.  And then there are those remedies that make you go hmmm.  Some work and some don’t.  The first I heard of toothpaste vanishing pimples, I thought it was a little crazy.  “Toothpaste is for brushing teeth, not putting on my face”.  You know what, though? It works!
I used to use Clearasil all the time.  It was a nightly ritual, every night of the week even.  Then I moved to various face cleansers.  Those had the same result.  And on top of that, those cleansers burned (I know, there’s alcohol in the cleanser, hence the burn).  Years back, I learned of putting toothpaste on your pimples to eradicate them faster.
There are two ways toothpaste can work to get rid of pimples.  In the first sense, toothpaste can act like a mask, drawing impurities out of the skin: it may also dry the skin slightly as it does so.  This will gradually reduce the size of the pimple.  In addition, some toothpaste contains menthol or alcohol, two compounds which can dry the skin.  Although they can make your skin too dry, not the desired outcome.  I say don’t get addicted to doing this.  Apply nightly until the pimple goes away.  It shouldn’t take long, a few nights at most.  Just put a dab on the tip of your finger.  No need to over-apply. And wash your face in the morning (if you don’t already) to wash off the paste.
Do not, by any means, pop pimples.  Asprin can be ground into paste with water and applied overnight.  Lime or lemon juice and potato wedges are also mentioned in an article I read.  I’d not heard anything about either of these.  One reader comment after this article said not to try this if you have sensitive skin.  Well, mine is what might be considered sensitive and this works for me.  Take that as you will.
I still do use this remedy to this day.  It’s a good speedy remedy.  Just be sure you apply before you go to bed so it can be on overnight.  I wouldn’t apply it in the morning before going to work or school.  Unless you want to field comments like “What’s that on your face”? And if you apply overnight, it most likely won’t be there in the morning.
