Dear MTV,

You really need to grow up.  Here I am watching your little “awards” show and I see some crazy stuff.  What was that Miley Cyrus business? She’s up there in her underwear performing with over-sized stuffed bears and doing unspeakable things with Robin Thicke.  Wonder what Billy Ray and Alan Thicke think of their fantastic offspring? That performance looked like an X-Rated Care Bears deal.  Really, MTV?

I was glad to see Macklemore and Ryan Lewis win.  Although I can’t help but wonder if they’ll be around in a year or two.  I actually wonder that about many of these acts.  If things weren’t bad enough, they had Kanye West perform.  I hit the fast forward button on the DVR quite a bit.

We saw the late Rick James and two guys from Star Wars.  I’m sorry, that was Nile Rodgers (whoever he is) and Daft Punk.  Best Female went to Taylor Swift.  I was wondering, best female what? They didn’t really specify.  I guess it was best song for “I Knew You Were Trouble”.  She even thanked the inspiration for the song, saying “you know who you are”.  Well alright then.  There’s nothing like a good old fashioned dig on someone on national television.

Jimmy Fallon presented Justin Timberlake with the Video Vanguard award.  I liked that, MTV.  He’s an actual artist. Good job.  Before accepting, Justin performed a montage of hits. He also reunited with N’Sync for a few seconds.  No doubt that was the highlight of 2013 for those other guys.

It’s not a good sign when, out of a 3 hour show, only two acts were fairly decent.  Then again, a 34 year-old Caucasian male isn’t exactly that networks target audience.  After viewing (or attempting to view) this, I am left to wonder just who is your target audience.  I’m not alone, either.  I read several similar posts on Facebook.  Oh, and you’re not so much about music anymore.  You ought to change your name.  How about DTV-with the “D” standing for disgusting?

Sincerely,

A real music lover.
