Against The Grain by: Andy Sullivan
Back In Time- Growing up in the 80’s, I have an affinity for music and television shows that some might find silly. The A-Team (yes kids, it was a show way before it was an Ed Sheeran song), Growing Pains, Miami Vice, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Perfect Strangers, I could go on and on about these shows. Again, yes kids they were shows before they were movies. I will say that I was pumped when I heard that some of my favorite television shows were to become movies. Then I watched the movie and discovered why they should’ve been left as television shows!
My favorite Sirius xm stations are 70’s on 7, ‘80’s on 8, and the Blend. They are all comprised of music I grew up hearing and loving, with the Blend being some of that mixed in with today’s music (thus the name). As a birthday present, I went to the Ryman to see Hall & Oates perform. Quite a few of those songs took me back. Is that a sign you’re getting older-when you say “takes me back”? I’ll own up to that, if that’s the case.
I also like Spotify. I like that because you can make your own playlists and take them anywhere. My playlists run the gamut from ‘60’s to today. I also have some specialty playlists. My favorite at the moment is my Islanders playlist. I’ve added everything from Jimmy Buffett and Bob Marley to UB40, Beach Boys and Gloria Estefan to that one. I listen to Spotify a lot when I work out, write or just when I want to hear some good music.
I dare say that Spotify is over-taking i-pods. When you sign up for Spotify you can get it on all mobile devices. Therefore, since the Kindle is small enough to take anywhere, you can have Spotify everywhere. Plus, Spotify payment is broken in 3 months to yearly plans of as low as $9.99. I-tunes is a little more than $1.30 per song. Neither of which breaks the bank at all.
Satellite radio, Spotify, I-tunes is where it’s at these days. You can get all the music you want from when you grew up, or whenever you want. You can get all the Hall & Oates you want. Television-wise, you can see all those old shows I mentioned and then some on HULU, HULU Plus, Netflix, etc. This proves that you really can go back in time.
