Against The Grain by: Andy Sullivan

Saturday January 19th, I went to Poppy’s Dinky Donuts, located at 1379 North Main Street, Beaver Dam, KY 42320 in the Village Shopping Center, between the Village Barber Shop and Purdue Office.  Dinky’s is locally owned by Kathy and Larry Hayse, the “young-ins, in-laws, out-laws and all their grandchildren”.  They opened for their first day of business on Friday January 18th.
Some may recall the Hayse family from the ‘70’s and ‘80’s Original Pizza Place in Ohio County, located in the Mid-town Plaza.  Now they are back and selling “dinky” (mini) donuts.  January 25, there will be a drawing for an Apple IPad mini (dinky) tablet, for which I registered when I visited.

“Our Dinky Donuts are prepared HOT on the SPOT.  They are fresh all day, made to order right in front of you. Come watch and enjoy our hot and fresh dinky donuts and a cup of Starbucks House Blend coffee”. They also serve all-beef “dinky dogs” (mini hot dogs) and homemade chili for lunch.  They also have “Dinky Delights”(soft serve ice cream).  They told me “We opened Friday at 6 am and business was non-stop”.

“Watch for our mascot, honk and wave. Most of all drive SLOWLY and CAREFULLY while passing (under the costumes are their grandchildren).  You can reach Poppy’s by calling (270)298-0287.

Across the way is the Beaver Dam location of Tiffany’s Tanning.  I stopped in to see my friend and she was having chili from Dinky’s.  Tiffany said “it was a steady stream of customers on (Dinky’s) opening day”.  There were several in Dinky’s the day I was there as well.  Go by and check it out.  They’d be glad to see you.  By the way, the donuts are awesome!
