Against The Grain by: Andy Sullivan

This week marks the premiere of the new fall television season. The Office got the head start on their final season, as they began last week.  Given how sparingly they roll out a new episode these days, however, they’ll probably end when every other show ends. The question is: how will the show end? One thing is fairly certain; don’t expect a Steve Carrell cameo.  By the way, former star Mindy Kailing also recognized a sinking ship.  She left after last season to begin her own show, The Mindy Project, which will premiere this week on FOX.
How I Met Your Mother, Partners (new show), Two Broke Girls and Mike & Molly make up CBS Monday night this season, of which I am a regular viewer.  Two new episodes of Zooey Deschanel’s show New Girl (another favorite of mine) make up my Tuesday night viewing on FOX. Wednesday sees the return of The Middle and Modern Family (two favorites) on ABC.  No doubt ABC will trumpet Modern Family’s monster Emmy night in preparation for the show’s premiere.  I’m sure that show will provide many more hilarious scenes and gags.
Thursday I watch NBC.  Since they haven’t found a decent 7 pm show since the Cosby era, NBC has trotted out Saturday Night Live’s 30-minute political satire of Weekend Update.  I admit that I wondered if that would last.  It has since it’s a seasonal thing.  The solidly funny Up All Night follows at 7:30, with the final season of the Office at 8:00.  I depart NBC at 8:30, as I’m not a Parks and Rec fan. I’ll be tivo’ing Thursday CBS, however, as they’ve got the Big Bang Theory and Two and a Half Men.  I’m not sure why they moved Men from its staple Monday at 8 slot to Thursday.  Perhaps they’re trying to revitalize a stale show.  I mean, Ashton Kutcher is no Charlie Sheen.  Need I remind you that Anger Management’s first season has better ratings than Men?
I normally don’t watch much on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, except for football.  Thanks to program change, though, I will be tivo’ing Revenge (Sunday at 8 on ABC) and The Mentalist (Sunday at 9 on CBS).  I usually am watching Sunday Night Football, so something might have to go.  We’ll see.  At any rate, the new fall season is sure to be full of surprise hits, quick cancellations, and (hopefully for networks) new staple programs.  Should be fun to watch what happens.
