Against The Grain by: Andy Sullivan

Helping the less fortunate always gives a warm and fuzzy feeling.  I wasn’t sure what that felt like until about three years ago. That’s when I began helping bring supplies to SAM 100.7’s Stuff the Bus. I’ll chronicle a bit of this year’s STB in a bit, but right now let’s explore exactly what is that good feeling we get when we assist others.

Tina Jennings from WBKO interviews Tony Rose from Sam 100.7

In my psychology courses, I learned about intrinsic (inside) and extrinsic (outside) reward.  It’s an intrinsic feeling you get when you help for no other reason except that it’s the right thing to do.  By contrast, extrinsic means doing things for public notoriety and reward.  With a thing like Stuff the Bus, Cram the Cruiser, or any other event held in various counties to help kids, you really get both feelings.  You do it for the intrinsic, but good works will get attention.  When a community gathers together to help, everyone benefits.

SAM 100.7 DJ Tony Rose just wrapped his seventh year of Stuff The Bus, where he lives in a school bus non-stop for at least four days.  The supplies will go to various schools around the area, not just Warren County.  There was enough glue collected to fill approximately 250 milk cartons with glue.  If lined up, all pencils and pens collected could go from Campbell Lane (where the bus was stationed) to WBKO studios.  Three buses were filled with school supplies when all was said and done. Over 10 counties in Southern Kentucky will benefit from Stuff The Bus 2012.

Seven schools were entered into a drawing to win an iPad, in which North Butler Elementary was drawn as one of the winners; another winner of an iPad was Greenville Middle School.  Just how much money was raised during STB? At least $75,000 went to purchase school supplies. Final totals: 1905 oz. of glue, 212,000 pens and pencils, 4,555 pens and markers and 144 flash drives,  All told Stuff The Bus 7 has collected, 7.5 tons of school supplies(three full buses) were collected for kids in need in Southern Kentucky.

The Butler County Family Resource Center does their part to help kids in Butler County.  FRC will be open at least one week before school starts.  School starts in Butler County August 9.
