Against The Grain by: Andy Sullivan

Friday June 29, I went to Nashville for my sister’s wedding at Riverwood Mansion. It was 109 degrees at the time of the wedding-not exactly comfortable weather, especially since I was one of the guys in a tux! A day after the most beautiful wedding I’ve ever been involved in, my family met my new brother-in-law’s family at Monell’s At the Manor, located at 1400 Murfreesboro Pike, Nashville, TN 37217.

Monell’s has great southern food served family style in a historic setting. A wide variety of food was brought to the table. Everyone starts out with country biscuits that, in my opinion, rival Cracker Barrel. Later, your waiter/waitress brings out eggs, meat, etc. They also have skillet-fried chicken at every meal.

For those wondering, Monell’s caters. They do breakfasts, box lunch, drop-off catering, off-site catering, and items by the pound and break-out (snacks). Wondering about the daily menu? Of course you are. Monday: chicken & dumplings and meatloaf. Tuesday: spinach lasagna and pot-roast. Wednesday: pork chops, baked chicken and fried chicken. Thursday: Smothered chicken with gravy and meatloaf. Friday lunch is fried catfish and spinach lasagna. For Friday dinner, add bbq ribs to the catfish and lasagna.

The weekend country breakfast is smoked sausage, bacon (a favorite of my buddy Brian Banks and myself), biscuits and gravy, country ham, fried apples, pancakes, scrambled eggs, hash browns, cheese grits, skillet fried chicken, corn pudding and coffee.

Their prices range from $12.77 (Monday-Friday) to $13.68 (Saturday), $18.76 (Sunday), $14.65 (dinner Tuesday-Thursday). Friday and Saturday dinner is $17.39. Weekend breakfast is $13.27. Kids 3 and under eat free, children 4-10 at Child Price, children 10 and older eat at full price.

There is one thing you must know. DO NOT pull your cell phone out at the table or they WILL NOT serve you! I learned this one almost the hard way. I was going to write the name of the place in my notes. Luckily, Amy told me to put the phone away, as I didn’t know the rules. You definitely don’t want to miss out on the great food because of a technicality. For more information, go to www.monellstn.com.

Monell’s has additional locations in Germantown, Gallatin, and Café Monell’s on 2826 Bransford Avenue.
