Addison Hall wins BC Spelling Bee

Addison Hall and BC Superintendent Scott Howard

On Thursday February 7th, the annual Butler County Spelling Bee was held in the Butler County Education and Technology Center. The event was scheduled to begin at 5:30 P.M. The three contestants were 5th grader Mattie McKinney, representing North Butler Elementary, 3rd grader Gracie Cardwell, representing Morgantown Elementary, and Addison Hall, representing Butler County Middle School. The three judges were Rick Scott, Patty Craig, and Georgia Romans. The pronouncer was Mrs. Paula Clark, media specialist at BCHS.

The event began with two test rounds in which the contestants could rehearse the rules and regulations of the Bee, which differed slightly from the rules of the Bees held at the schools. The words were very simple,  including the spellings of simple colors and the names of months. After this, round one of official competition began.

The competition ran approximately 15 minutes as a victor emerged after only a few turns. Addison Hall took the victory and will be representing the Butler County district on March 9th at the 2013 Ford Motor Company Derby Festival Spelling Bee (grades 3-8). She also received a $25 savings bond made possible through Georgia Romans, who represents the Butler County DAR.
