Aaron Jacobs: Points in American History
The Signers of the Declaration: On July 4, 1776, fifty-six men signed a document that would lay the foundation for the United States to begin, the Declaration of Independence. In this document, they specified at least 27 grievances that the colonists had with the British government. At this time, the signers of the Declaration were still considered British subjects, but by signing this document, they pledged their lives, fortunes, and sacred honor to the American cause. It is important for us as Americans to understand that there has been a great price paid so that we can enjoy our freedoms today.
Five of the signers were captured by the British and tortured. Twelve of the signers had their homes and properties looted and burned. Nine of the signers died from wounds sustained from fighting on the battlefield. Those who signed the Declaration of Independence understood that they were committing an act of treason against England and would be killed if the revolution failed. However, they were willing to sacrifice all, even their lives, so that America could be free from tyrannical rule, and each American could enjoy life as a free citizen.
