2023 Stockman’s Association Forage Quality Contest
The Butler County Stockman’s Association Board of Directors is sponsoring a Forage Quality Contest for Stockman’s Association members.
Lance Lockhart, Butler County’s Young Farmer Teacher, will come to your farm to pull samples of hay your farm made during the 2023 growing season. The samples will be tested at the KY Department of Agriculture’s hay testing lab in Frankfort. Producers will receive a copy of their results so they can manage the feeding of their hay supply. Winners of the forage contest will be determined by the relative feed value of the samples.
There are 3 divisions of the contest. Grass Hay, Legume or Grass/Legume mixed hay, and baleage. Stockman’s members can enter a sample in each division. The Stockman’s Association will pay the testing fees for contest samples. There are cash prizes awarded for the winner of each division and the runner up.
Lance intends to pull the samples for the contest during the first week of October 2023. Contact Lance Lockhart or the Extension Office to get you or your farm involved in the contest. Winners will be announced at the 2024 Stockman’s Association Annual Meeting in March 0f 2024.
