2019 Memorial Day Program

The Annual Memorial Day Program took place on the Butler County courthouse lawn on Monday, May 27. The event was hosted by the General Richard Butler Chapter Sons of the American Revolution. A large crowd gathered to remember those that had fallen. Chapter President Roger Givens welcomed everyone and a presentation of colors by the Sons of the American Revolution color guard took place. Rob Hankins led the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by the singing of the National Anthem by Rachel Hinton.

Chaplain Gary Southerland gave the prayer. Regent Jane Kent Smith of the Butler County Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution shared a reading from a Memorial Program held in the local cemetery in 1919.

Melanie Hunt, Regent of the Green River Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, recognized veterans in attendance.

Givens shared a poem in honor of the fallen. Sherry Webster, Lynda Knight, Darlene Scott, Jennifer Odle, Kay Hampton and Vickie Hutcheson of the Butler County Piece Makers presented "Quilts of Valor " to 20 veterans in attendance.

The following veterans were present: Jonathan Truelove, David Key, Gary Phelps, Jon Calloway, Fred Tate, Chuck Pagoria, Robert 'Doc" Daugherty, Jim Parker, Roxie Wright Henderson, William Childress Joey Tutko, Joey Johnson, Thomas Brown, David Cannon, Rodney Smith, Tommy Wood, Scott Green, Chris Sanders, Paul D. Elmore and William H. "Bill" Sweatt.

Jarrod Carathers performed the "Battle Hymn of the Republic" on the fiddle.

In closing, Sherry Webster, Jane Smith, Melanie Hunt and Roger Givens did the laying of the wreath and Bryant McClellan played Taps.
