12th DISTRICT: Bears advance to district title game; Lady Bears fall short
WHITESVILLE — Butler County defeated Edmonson County 78-68 in the semifinals of the 12th District Boys' Basketball Tournament at Whitesville Trinity on Wednesday, Feb. 26.
Following the win, Butler County improved to 17-13. The Bears advance to meet Grayson County in the 12th District Boys' Basketball Tournament Championship Game at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 28.
Butler County carried a lead out of each quarter, edging Edmonson County 24-22 in the opening period.
The Bears led 39-37 at halftime and remained ahead midway through the second half.
Butler County led 58-53 at the conclusion of the third quarter.
Third Region Boys' Basketball Player of the Year Ty Price paced Butler County, scoring a game-high 39 points for the Bears.
Joining Price in double figures for Butler County, Justin Castlen netted 20 points.
Narrowly missing double figures for Butler County, Briar Griffin put in nine points while Trever Deweese posted eight points.
Rounding out Butler County's scoring, Case Hooten contributed two points.
Butler County notched its sixth win in seven games.

Wilson scores 1,000th career point in Lady Bears' loss to Grayson County
WHITESVILLE — Butler County couldn't overcome a slow start as Grayson County pulled away to win 61-44 in the 12th District Girls' Basketball Tournament on Monday, Feb. 24.
The loss eliminated Butler County from the 12th District Girls' Basketball Tournament. With the loss, Butler County dropped to 11-15.
Grayson County started strong, outscoring Butler County 14-5 in the opening quarter.
Remaining ahead midway through the district tournament game, Grayson County led 35-20 at halftime.
Grayson County, which produced offensively and defensively in each half, led 45-31 at the conclusion of the third period.
Sophomore Ava Wilson paced Butler County, scoring 17 points for the Lady Bears. Reaching a milestone, Wilson scored her 1,000th career point.
Karrington Hunt accompanied Wilson in double figures for Butler County, netting 10 points.
Five players accounted for all of Butler County's scoring. The additional scorers for Butler County were Ann Marie Skaggs (eight points), Bailey Moore (seven points) and Carley Cardwell (two points).
