1,200+ tires found near Isaiah Evans Cemetery

More than 1,200 tires and truck-loads of refuse have been removed from the Isaiah Evans Cemetery area in the Fifth District area of north Butler County. The cemetery is located off KY 79 N across from Oak Ridge Road. Butler County Solid Waste Coordinator and Enforcement Officer Mark Sorrels says he received a call from a Butler County resident reporting the massive dump site. Sorrels calls this site one of the biggest dumps he has come across during his time as the solid waste coordinator.

After discovering the site, Sorrels got in touch with the Kentucky Department for Environmental Protection Division of Waste Management. Members of the Bowling Green field office came down for a preliminary inspection of the site before any action could be taken. After their inspection, Sorrels was able to secure funding to pay for the removal of the tires and trash that had been dumped near the cemetery over the course of several years. Sorrels hired a local contractor for the clean-up job, which lasted about a week. Sorrels says the clean-up is in its final stage and is awaiting a post-inspection from the Bowling Green Division of Waste Management office.

The site after the clean-up

Sorrels says that as a lifelong resident of Butler County, he does not appreciate seeing the county trashed up. "Too many people throw their trash out of their windows when they're driving home."

"If you don't want garbage in your yard, don't throw it in someone else's or throw it out in the side of the road," added Sorrels.

If you are aware of a dump site located in the county, or you have questions about disposing of waste, contact the Butler County Solid Waste Department at (270) 526-3433.

It is a shame that illegal dumping is still going on. Lewis Orange and I worked together for years to stop this practice. One dump that we got cleaned up was located on the side of the road near where the Aluminum plant is now. The county agreed to provide dump trucks and a backhoe to haul off numerous loads of garbage provided that we watch and prevent dumping from recurring there. It was a small success in a long battle. I remember at one time the river bank at Woodbury above the dam was used as a dump site and there was another dump site at logansport near the river. The last time I looked several years ago dumping was no longer occurring at those sites.
I dislike seeing our county trashed by these people. I would like to see a county trash transfer station set up for items your trash man cannot pick-up. This would be something users would pay for as they use. I dont think it would solve this problem but i do think it would cut down on illegal dump sites and make it easier for people to get rid of unwanted items laying around. A transfer station would not have to open every day maybe just once a week.
Great job Mark!! This county is lucky to have someone as dedicated as you are.
