Andy Sullivan: Against The Grain
The Inner Game of Music, written by Barry Green, is the book I’m reading at the moment. The book really breaks down music in a way that I’ve not really read before. This book isn’t about any one artist in particular. It’s a little bit of a self-help book about music.
The story of the authors first time playing live reminded me of my first time playing guitar at church. I didn’t want to screw up. My heart beat faster, hands sweaty (cue the Eminem song “Lose Yourself”). I gripped the neck of my guitar; I think I must’ve had a death-grip on that thing. “Calm down. Go slow and you’ll be fine”, I reassured myself. Turns out, I was fine. Nerves are normal. Given the fact that it was my first ever performance, nerves were expected.
Nervous feelings are triggered by unpleasant situations and stressful events (like live performances). Make a list of what’s causing you stress. Alright, if you’re performing, that’s obviously what’s stressing you. Having dealt with it a time or two, I live by the principal of Nike’s slogan “Just Do It”.
I’m a little less than halfway into the book, which is pretty good so far. There is also an Inner Game of Sports, as well as several others. It’s an Inner Game franchise, if you will. The author discovered you could apply the principles from the sports book to music and other things. That set the wheels in motion for future books.
If you have a Kindle, or if you like reading from the hard cover, I suggest searching author Barry Green.
