Scout Troop builds and sells birdhouses so they can go camping

Mike, Melissa, and Thomas pick out their birdhouse.

With summer camp fast approaching and having hand built 190 genuine cedar bird house Boy Scout Troop 208 in Morgantown took to their efforts to the Kroger in Bowling Green this past Saturday. According to LeAnn Marksberry , grandmother of one the Scouts, “The boys need tents and other equipment so they can camp out like real Scouts and they are doing this to raise funds”.

The wood for the birdhouses came from the farm of Scoutmaster James Gates in Butler County who cut the logs into planks. The boys then hand assembled the genuine Cedar birdhouses using nails, glue, screws and some Scout sweat.
According to Troop Leader Mike Newland “Troop 208 was chartered in the 1940's and reformed in 2009". The Troop has about twelve members and will be traveling for an annual Camp Out to Camp Roy C. Manchester which is located on the 400 acre Pfeffer Scout Reservation on the shores of Kentucky Lake in far Southwestern Kentucky, It is truly in "America’s Heartland."

Hank Walker buying a birdhouse.

One of the birdhouses sold on Saturday was to Hank Walker, a former Morgantown resident and Boy Scout who said that “ I am buying this birdhouse to support the Troop”. Another birdhouse was purchased by Mike, Melissa and Thomas Wathen, Mike told me in conversation “ I wanted to be a Boy Scout when I was younger but I joined the Kentucky State Police instead”. The boys will be heading out soon taking with them their Totem chips, knot tying skills and possibly the smell of cedar. They are grateful for the houses they have already sold and are anticipating everyone’s support in their adventure. To purchase one of these fine Butler County birdhouses made from much sought after Cedar or for more information contact either LeAnn at 270-999-2559 or Debra Beck at 270-526-1227.
