Jarrod Jacob: What Would You Recommend?
There is a story told about a college professor who posed the following problem to his class and then asked for their resolution to the problem:
“A young woman was found to be pregnant out of wedlock. She has a fiancée, but he is not the father of the child. She did nothing to plan for this child or to provoke the circumstances which led to her pregnancy. She was simply overpowered. Her fiancée, whom she loves very much, is a very scrupulous man and would probably reject her when he finds out that she is with child. Her friends and the society in which she lives are also severely strict in their views about women being pregnant out of marriage, so she will be subjected to very sharp criticism and condemnation, and, perhaps, even punitive legal proceedings if and when her condition becomes known. Indeed, it is fair to say that her entire life will be permanently ruined and/or affected by this pregnancy. Even if her fiancée would forgive her and take her anyway, an unplanned-for child this early in their marriage would greatly complicate their future plans. Both the man and the woman are already below the poverty level and will have to move away from their home town at the latter period of her pregnancy. What would you recommend for this girl? What should she do?”
The class unanimously recommended that she should have an abortion. “Congratulations,” the professor told the class, “you have just killed Jesus Christ!”
For further study to see where the professor got his information, please read Luke 1:26-56 and Matthew 1:18-25. I think the account of the professor and his students gives us some startling insight into the mind of some people today. How many of us, had we been in that class, would also have recommended that the pregnant girl abort (i.e., kill) her baby? Or, perhaps some of us would not have actually encouraged her to do it, but would have “understood” had we learned that she had done such a thing? Would our decision to kill or not have been based upon who the girl and baby are? Be honest!
The murder of babies, called “abortion”, continues in this country at an alarming rate daily. There are 4 million babies killed in the U.S. each year through the practice called “abortion”! What compounds the sadness and sin is to realize that the babies being killed are innocent. They have done nothing to deserve death. Statistics show that oftentimes, people just do not wish to deal with the physical consequences of sin; so they make plans to kill the “evidence,” the baby. To kill unborn babies is to be guilty of shedding innocent blood (Prov. 6:17).
Please understand that for all who will repent of this sin, there is forgiveness in Christ (Acts 2:38). However, let us make the effort to avoid these actions in the first place. In order to avoid these problems, parents must teach their children to be morally pure, righteous, and godly. By teaching what is right, we can avoid what is wrong. (Prov. 22:6; I Thess. 5:21-22)
