Andy Sullivan: Against The Grain

A few weeks ago, I was watching the TBS comedy Man At Work.  The main characters write for a magazine.  One of the characters wrote a story in an attempt to determine if nice guys finished last.  I found this to be an interesting premise, so I decided to do a little digging.
I got more than several helpful comments.  In fact, I told them that they basically helped me write my column! One of the first comments I got may be the best. This was: I truly believe there is someone for everyone.  One of the characters in Men At Work is excruciatingly nice, and engaged.  That goes quite a way in proving the “nice guys finish last” theory incorrect.
Another perspective is that there is no such thing as a nice guy, that it’s all an act.  Still another opinion is that you must find happiness in yourself and the rest will come in time.  That actually rings true for me.  One woman’s perspective is that some women date the bad boys, maybe even marry them.  Eventually, this source tells me, these women who try to tame the wild guy finally give in and give the nice guy a chance.
A guy must be true to himself. That holds true for anyone, actually.  The first several months of a relationship, sources say, is a smoke show: you do all the right things because you want to be the good date.  She told me “it’s who you are when the “date mask” comes off that shows a woman who you really are.
I think that being that you are, playing no games, finally pays off.  It may take longer. Scratch that, it definitely will take longer, believe me.  So, I will ask again, do nice guys finish last? I wouldn’t say they finish last.  They may finish a little bit later, but that’s ok. Life’s what happens when you’re busy making other plans, so one really doesn’t know about the nice guy thing.  Finish last or finish first? I don’t think it matters.  But hey, that’s just one guys opinion.
