Tennis: Boys drop 2-7 decision to Eagles, Girls defeat Ohio Co. 8-1
The Lady Bears Tennis Team moved to 2-0 on the young season, taking down region-foe Ohio County in Morgantown on Monday afternoon.
Facing an OhioCountyteam with only four girls, none with much experience, the veteran ButlerCountysquad would make quick work of their opponents. Starting things off in doubles, the #1 and #2 doubles teams would drop only one game between them for two quick wins. With the match already in-hand, the top 4 girls were pulled from singles play, allowing for a different group of four girls to play. The results would not be much different, as the Lady Bears took the #1, #2, and #3 singles spots.

The Butler County Boys Tennis Team took on a senior and experienced-filled Ohio County team on Tuesday afternoon. And while the final score would not be in Butler County's favor, the Bears did not go down without a fight. The #1 doubles team of Embry/Merrkick dropped their doubles match to a solid Ohio County team. From there, just about every other match would go down to the wire. The #2 team of Hajari/Grubb picked up a 6-2 7-5 win. The #3 match, playing a pro-set, went down to the wire and ended up in a tiebreaker at 8-8. In the tiebreak the team of Harpe/Beasley dug themselves out of a quick 2-5 hole, tying things up at 5-5, before dropping two more points for a 8-9 (5-7) loss.
In singles, #1 Brennan Grubb dropped a 1-6 1-6 decision, but the score did not do him justice, for the quality of play that was exhibited. At #2 singles, Matt Embry ran out to a 6-3 win in the first set, before hitting a roadblock and dropping the second set 0-6. Playing a super tiebreaker instead of a full third set, Embry would drop it 1-0 (10-5). At #3 singles, Dakota Merrick would play a tight pro-set match that would also go down to the wire. At 8-8, another tiebreaker would be played. In the tiebreaker, it would go down to the wire, before Ohio County prevailed 7-5. At #4 singles Amit Hajari would run out to a good lead, give it up, get it back, and even hold triple-match point, before falling 7-9. Remmington Harpe would temporarily stop the bleeding for Butler County at #5 singles, picking up a nice 8-3 victory. At #6 singles, Ivan Beasley would also drop a very close match, falling 6-8.
Final score, a "close but no cigar" 2-7 loss for the Bears. Said Coach Dockery, "The team score looks bad for us, but if we win a couple of points in five very-close matches against a veteran Ohio County team, we flip the score from a 2-7 loss to a 7-2 win. I hope this is a wake-up call for our boys team and for the rest of the region."
In exhibition matches, Austin Phelps would pick up two 8-6 victories over his opponents.
