Wild Goings On At Morgantown Methodist

Pator Darrin Jones' pie face.

If you were at the Morgantown First United Methodist Church this Sunday morning, you got to see Case Hooten and Nathan Jones throw a pie in Pastor Darrin’s face!  Next Sunday, Pastor Darrin will be preaching with wild or multi-colored hair, Bethanne Jones and Kelsey Hughson have some ideas, and it will be good!  Then the next Sunday, all his hair will be gone!

Pastor Jones gave his congregation hints throughout the month of August about an upcoming surprise. On the last Sunday in August he announced a canned food drive for the Morgantown Mission during the month of September. He gave the church a challenge that if they donated 400 cans someone could throw a pie in his face, if 500 cans were donated his daughter Bethanne would dye his hair a really wild color, and for 600 cans he would shave his head bald.

The Food Pantry is just one of the ways the church has supported the Morgantown Mission. Donations are low this time of year, and this seemed like a fun way to renew interest in the program.  The box for food in the church entry hall has grown and overflowed each week, and a chart on the wall has recorded the number of cans. The 400 mark was passed by the middle of the month, and as the count rapidly approaches 500 Pastor Darrin looks a little nervous when he touches his hair, but he is obviously proud of the generosity of the congregation and their friends. This Sunday 285 items were donated, bringing the total to 735!!  We have surpassed all the totals that had a planned event, so we are looking for ideas for the 700, 800, 900 mark, or beyond.  We have one more Sunday to bring in as many cans as possible, and remember, we are helping to feed those in need, so bring in those cans!

The people and churches of Butler County are known for their generosity. Wouldn’t be wonderful to see what the other churches could do? They can always ask Gary McKinney at the Mission what they need.

If you’d like to see a colorful, or even bald, Pastor Jones stop in at the church any Sunday at 11 am. The Morgantown Methodist Church is on Main St. just passed Dr. Wan’s Clinic.
