Green River Museum Hosts Book Signing

Roger G. Givens

On Saturday September 1st, a book signing was held for "Images of America: Butler County" a book written by Roger G. Givens, retired newspaper publisher, and Nancy Richey. The book is part of the "Images of America" series published by Arcadia Publishing in South Carolina. Givens states that the book contains a little over 200 photographs, each with a 50-70 word caption. He says they submitted 220 photographs but some were not included by the publisher due to quality limitations.

The book came about because Givens had been submitting photos to the Kentucky Library at WKU, where Nancy Richey is the photo librarian. Richey, who had previously arranged another Images of America book for Barren County, as well as assisted with one about Warren County suggested that they compile a book for Butler County as well. Givens did all the writing and submitted photos, while Richey arranged the layout of the pages and submitted it to the publisher.

A portion of the book sales will be donated to the Green River Museum. Tommy Hines, the director of the museum states,

"I'm glad that we were able to have his book signing here at the museum. The book uses a lot of photos from our collection as well as many private collections. Anything we can do to promote history in Butler County is a good thing."

"Images of America: Butler County" includes many photographs of the area’s historic events, religious and educational institutions, and residents in their daily activities to showcase a once vibrant river heritage. The book also features two governors, an attorney general of Kentucky, a chief justice of the Kentucky Supreme Court, a US senator, three US representatives, a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient, two US Navy admirals, a Methodist bishop, and countless other equally productive citizens who proudly call Butler County home.

Pick up your copy at Beech Tree News/WLBQ 1570 office, located at 107 West Ohio Street.  Books are $21.99 plus tax.

Enjoying my copy of "Images of America: Butler County". An interesting and informative book all Butler Countians should own. It also supports our Green River Museum with a portion of the sales. Great job Roger!!
Here I am in California enjoying every page of your book. Thank you Roger. I especially loved seeing Elvis and Ruby Renfrow's store and was surprised to learn that the Smith coffin sales were originally conducted upstairs. And seeing Dr. Miller's photo brought back many memoires of accompaning my Grandmother on her visits to him. Acknowleding Sam Radcliff really made me smile. Your detailed and thoughtful work on this project is obvious and I deeply appreciate your efforts.
