United Way seeking county funds for book program, 211 services

Butler County Fiscal Court met in regular session on Monday, March 9, at the Butler County Courthouse.  All magistrates were in attendance: Stevie Givens, Kevin Phelps, Allen Smith, David Whittinghill, and Dillon Bryant.
With no old business on the agenda, the court entered new business.
Ellie Harbaugh, of United Way, addressed the court seeking a $1,000 donation for the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, which was launched in 2014 in Butler County.  The program sends 12 high-quality books per child per year; total cost is $35/ child, with the state covering half, net $17.50/child.  Butler County enrollment rose from 162 in 2020 to 427 currently; thus, the annual funding need is $7,500. Magistrates took no action as the request is for next year’s budget.

Next, magistrates heard a request from United Way for $1,500 for the fiscal year 26-27 to continue 211 operations in Butler County.  211 is a free to consumer, confidential helpline operated by United Way that provides information and referrals to callers, texters, and walk-ins.  Butler County recorded 104 callers in 2024 and 247 callers in the past 12 months. The top needs: help paying utility costs; food insecurity; shelter; disaster services; rent assistance; tax assistance; general financial aid; and low-income housing.  Since the request was for the next fiscal year, the court took no action on the request.
