Patty Craig: A Slice of Time

August is one of my favorite months, and it has often been a month of planning or change. The month is typically busy and warm. As a retired educator, I began a new work cycle in August for many years. Recently, I’ve been thinking about August activities such as family events, financial planning, and personal milestones.

First, August family events may include many things. I always think about back-to-school tasks, such as school shopping, and health visits to prepare for children’s participation in school and sports. The beginning of the school year may require a sleep schedule change for many families. Additionally, August is a popular month for family reunions. It’s also the month in which I think about a fall trip: to go or not, where and when, lodging and transportation. Family activities are woven throughout the month.

Second, August is a good month to review our financial choices. One financial choice may be saving for future needs, such as creating an emergency fund.  The immediate goal for an emergency fund might be $1,000; but over time, the fund may grow to cover three to six months’ worth of essential living expenses. Also, committing to a Christmas club account helps people avoid credit purchases during the holiday season. Another financial choice is the kind of insurance policies a person carries: health insurance, vision and/or dental insurance, life insurance, and vehicle and home/rental insurance, etc. Experts suggest that insurance coverage be reviewed annually as well as when there are significant changes in life, such as moving or buying a new car. Comparison shopping for insurance is also encouraged.

Third, personal milestones are moments in life that mark stages, showing growth and development. For example, my late husband and I celebrated 40 anniversaries (August 1) before his death. We have three daughters, and our family is growing. I currently have ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren with the sixth one due this month. I am blessed. The August months haven’t been smooth every year. During August, I lost my dad (2009) and my granddad (1987) – precious family. Milestone events can be negative as well as positive.

These various activities – family events, financial planning, and personal milestones – can certainly happen in any month. Yet, in my life, the month of August has generally included planning and change – as well as being busy and warm. It’s a time of activity.
