Meet the Candidate: Dana Phelps - Jailer
Name: Dana Phelps
Age: 48
Office Seeking: Butler County Jailer
Party Affiliation: Republican
What made you decide to run for this office?
Serving our county has been a lifelong commitment for me, I have always wanted to run for Butler County Jailer and I feel like now is the time for me. I have worked under three different administration which started with my grandfather Jimbat Johnson who served this community and jail for over 30 years. He instilled in me the dedication and long hours it takes to succeed. My brother Ricky Romans is presently jailer and fully supports my campaign for Butler County Jailer. I feel like through my years of experience with county and city government and working in public agencies I will bring a unique set of skills that will be suited to lead out jail system into the future.
What are your main qualifications for this office?
With well over 20 years of experience in county and city government I feel like I am very qualified for the elected position. I have 13 years experience as an emergency medical technician on the Butler County Ambulance Service, four years as a 911 dispatcher, and six years with the City of Morgantown. I have worked for three different administrations within two different jails. The next elected jailer will need to understand budgeting, financing, building relationships with other agencies, and leadership.
I have received many different certifications throughout my career including Master of City Government through the Kentucky League of Cities.
In the olden days education was not as important as it is at this point in time with all elected officials, being from Butler County and working my entire life here, with multiple jobs at a time, I have a full understanding of the scope of operations of the Butler County Jail and what the constituents we serve are expecting out of its leaders.
If elected, what changes/improvements would you hope to bring to the office?
The jail overtime has become antiquated with much less than acceptable facilities. It is my hope and desire to update the jail system and how it operates, the safety of its inmates and staff, are the forefront of a successful jail system. The continued growth and education of the inmates are a major concern and priority to me, I will commit resources towards a renewed focus on inmate education, employability and development of successful life skills – three things that are more important now than ever before our community.
In summary, why should voters cast their ballot for you?
I believe I am the candidate you should vote for as Butler County Jailer because I have spent my entire working life dedicated to serving Butler County citizens, I have educated myself in all aspects of city and county government, I have spent years volunteering in different organizations, working with many civic organizations throughout our county and it would be my honor to serve as the first female elected Jailer in Butler County’s long history.
