VFW Auxiliary Veteran of the Year Rovie Alford
Rovie L. Alford was born November 16, 1935, and raised on Oak Ridge Road Neafus, Kentucky.
Alford joined the Air Force in April 1954 at the age of 18 and was discharged in April 1958.
He had basic training at Sampson Air Force on the Seneca Lake in New York.
He then attended Aircraft Maintenance school at Sheppard Air Force base near Wichita Falls, Texas.
Finally, wound up at Rhine Main in Frankfurt Germany where we flew cargo to several countries including England, Algiers, Libya, Italy, Greece, and Saudi Arabia.
He returned to Donaldson Air Force Base in Greenville, South Carolina where he was discharged in April 1958.
After being discharged, he attended Spartan School of Aeronautics in Tulsa, Oklahoma on the Korean Bill of Rights. While there he obtained an Aircraft and Power Plant (A & P), Flight Engineer, and Commercial Pilots license.
He worked at Eastern Air Lines as an Aircraft Mechanic for 28 years than Lockhead Air mod as an Aircraft Inspector. He then retired in 1998.
His hobbies now include scuba diving, rock and gem making, including faceting, cabochons, silver smiting, gold smiting, and repairing lapidary equipment and reselling.
