Don Locke; Lookin Thru Bifocals

What have you seen lately? Really seen.

Recently I made several trips to Bowling Green- I had a driver. I got to just ride, and look- and remember. There is the back of Robert and Alto Reeus old house, coming into Hadley. Old friends now gone. Alto was a retired fifth grade teacher. Robert worked for the US government soil conservation service before he retired on disability early as a result of combat fatigue in World War II- unable to function normally anymore. They have a “syndrome” name for now. Robert Could get around ok. When Alto went to school each day, Robert left alone, would sometimes sneak- off to a local store and buy a candy bar- a no-no. He was a diabetic. What the heck. He was happy. Do not miss folks like Robert and Alto. They were a joy.

Coming on into view from I65 there was the old garage at Hadley. A fellow by the name of Sharer Row it originally. He came down from up north to work in the log woods. Met and married a young lady and stayed. He never lost his up north accent. Probably the only person in Hadley who spoke with a Michigan accent.

Coming on into the edge of Bowling Green, there was the small, white house on the side of the road-still there after 60+ years. When Bett and I were in schools at Western, I recall taking her to this house to have a dress made by a lady who sewed. Bett does not remember the house, but she can still decipher the dress to a T. Women never forget a pretty dress.

Kindest Regards…
