Andy Sullivan: Against the Grain

Cover to Cover-My covers series returns.  I’ll begin with “Let It Be Me”.  It was originally published in French in 1955 as Je t’appartiens”.  It became popular worldwide with an English version by the Everly Brothers and later a duet by Betty Everett and Jerry Butler.  The Everly Brothers version was released in 1960.  The B side was “Since You Broke My Heart”.  Betty Everett and Jerry Butler released it in 1964.  The B side was “Aint That Loving You Baby”. On the countryside, the song charted for Glen Campbel and Bobby Gentry in 1969, and Willie Nelson in 1982.

“Rave On” was originally performed by the late Buddy Holly in 1958.  Artists such as Bruce Springsteen, Commander Cody, Status Quo, M Ward, and the folk-rock band Steeleye Span have covered the song, also Nitty Gritty Dirt Band(’70), the Real Kids(’77) and, the one besides Holly’s of which I’m most familiar, John Mellencamp recorded it for the Cocktail soundtrack in 1988.  Cliff Richard(“Devil Woman”, “We Don’t Talk Anymore”-’79) covered the song for his 2013 album The Fabulous Rock & Roll Songbook.

“Hippy Hippy Shake” was a song written and recorded by Chan Romero in 1959.  That same year, it reached #3 in Australia.   Romero was just 17 when he wrote the song.  A live version of “Hippy Hippy Shake” can be found on the Beatles album Live at the BBC.  That was recorded in 1963.  A cover version in the same year by Italian rocker Little Tony, U.K. band the Swinging Blue Jeans covered it, also in ’63.  Other covers are from the Rock Glam band Mud in 1974, British garage rock band Billy Childish and the Milkshakes covered it in 1984.  Davy Jones covered it in 1987 and, for you fellow Full House fans, Jesse and the Rippers performed the song live at Disney for the episode “The House Meets The Mouse”.  The Georgia Satellites covered the song in 1988.

I’ll end this covers installment with this song “When You Walk In The Room”.  Originally done by Jackie DeShannon in 1963.   She wrote the song.  The Searchers recorded it in 1964.  It wasn’t covered again until country singer Stephanie Winslow in 1981.  Paul Carrack covered it in 1987.  Country artist Pam Tillis put her spin on the song for her 1994 album Sweetheart’s Dance.
