SOCCER: Bears get wins over Hopkins Co. Central, Todd

After a week 1 that showed promise and potential for the 2017 Boys Soccer Bears, two home games were scheduled for week 2.

Tuesday, August 22nd saw the Bears host Hopkins County Central.  Unlike the first week, the Bears got on the scoreboard first with a strong volley from Jose Sanchez, which left the Bears with a 1 - 0 halftime lead.  Basically, both teams played a pretty even half.

Coach O'Driscoll told his team that momentum was up for grabs in the second half and whichever team scored first would claim that momentum.   His team took the message to heart with Ernest Lee scoring a goal within 5 minutes of the start of the second half.  From there it was all Bears with scores from Ernest Lee again, Marcos Neblina, Alex Diaz, and Cole Maxfield.  Goalkeeper Austin Burden and his defense almost recorded their first shut out of the season.  Hopkins Co. Central snuck in a goal with 5 minutes remaining in the game.  Final score was Butler Co. 8, Hopkins Co. Central 1.

Thursday, August 24 had Butler County hosting Todd County Central.  The Bears dominated play in the first half but had trouble getting the ball into the back of the net.  Kenyon Sutherland bounced a header off the left post.  Ernest Lee and Jose Sanchez both had point bland shots saved by last minute defensive plays by the Todd County defense.  Eventually the Bears scored twice in the first half with goals from Ernest Lee and Jose Sanchez showing the Bears up 2 to 0 for the first half.

The second half was a repeat of the first half with the Bears dominating play but missing numerous scoring opportunities.  Eventually Omar Lopez and Guermmo Gonzalez scored.  This game also was Austin Burden's first shut out with the defense of Kenyon Sutherland, Neil Bewley, Cortez Cook, Diego Morales, and Cole Maxfield playing consistent and error free defense.

Final Score Butler Co. 4, Todd Co. Central 0.

The soccer Bears record now stands at 3 - 2.  The Bears the Muhlenberg Mustangs at home on Monday, traveled Tuesday to Hopkins County Central, and on Thursday are at home with Logan County.
