BCMS Golfers Competing in Invitational Tournaments

The boys literally hanging onto Coach Moore's cart.

After a fulfilling breakfast at the Farm Boy, the Butler County Middle School boys golf team and a caravan of parents headed to the Golf Club of the Bluegrass in Versailles to participate in the school’s first ever 18-Hole Invitational Tournament.

“I was just thinking if all the boys could finish, I would be pleased,” said Coach Greg Moore. “Come to find out, some of the boys got stronger as they progressed. Some of the second nine-hole scores were much improved from the first nine,” Moore continued.

Andrew Gill led the way for the young team. His 95 and Jonah Swift’s 97 were scores that Moore anticipated but he also insisted that each of them are capable of being closer to 90 on any given occasion.

First-year player Drew Daugherty also contributed with a solid round of 111.

“Drew and Adam Rogers both improved on the second nine by nearly ten strokes. I am really proud of how all the boys endured the heat and kept pushing forward,” Moore exclaimed.

Rogers, another beginner, fired a 115 for the tournament, while Zac Johnson carded a 116 to round out the team’s scoring.

“Adam did a great job of keeping the ball in play and being consistent. He recently played in his first varsity match this week, along with Daugherty and Johnson,” Moore boasted.

All the middle school boys have been working extensively hard to improve and the team is playing in another tournament at the Brightleaf Golf Resort in Harrodsburg this Saturday.

Gill is not going to make the trip and Moore told us, “Andrew was disappointed; but, I explained to him that it will give an opportunity for another golfer. He is still going to play golf and enjoy Labor Day weekend with family and friends.”

Carson Miller, who has been impressing with his ball-striking ability, is the next man up for BCMS.

As serious of a picture one could get after these boys filled up on pizza and cookies.

“I am excited for Carson. He is ready for his first tournament even if he has only been playing on the team for a short time. He has walked nine holes with more experienced players and kept his pace of play exceptionally well,” Moore complimented.

Tournaments are time-consuming and weekend based.  Nevertheless, Moore emphasized how much more competitiveness these opportunities build for Butler County’s golf program.

“These boys are having so much fun while learning leaps and bounds.  It is an exhilarating experience to be involved with this program. If these guys stay with it, golf looks bright for Butler County’s future,” said Moore.
