Bears Tennis squads feature youth in 2016, looking to build momentum for future seasons
With just one senior on the Butler County High School tennis team, 2016 was expected to be a building year. Though youthful, BCHS tennis coach Kim Grubb said the team is poised for success in future—and in the remainder of the 2016 season.
“Emily Wallace is our lone senior for girls and boys teams,” Grubb said. “Our boys team is very young too. The boys team has several new players this season who have never played tennis. We have six girls and six boys officially on the team.”
Grubb noted two younger players, Solomon Flener and Keagen Grubb, have the potential to be “a deadly doubles duo in a few years.”
Sophomore Brennan Grubb has carried the boys team in 2016, as he is undefeated so far on the season.
“He is still undefeated this year with several key region wins,” Coach Grubb said.
The boys team has several new players this season who have never played tennis (Sam Rice and Dilon McCoy), so Grubb noted newcomers will need time to learn fundamentals and master the game.
“This is a building year,” coach Grubb said. “We have also brought on some boys who play basketball and know their athleticism will make them assets to the team.”
Lone senior Wallace has been a spark for the girls’ team, as she has maintained a winning record with doubles partner Delaney Embry.
