Lady Bears fall to Owensboro in region tournament

OWENSBORO — Butler County suffered a season-ending loss as Owensboro pulled away to win 58-40 in the quarterfinals of the 3rd Region Girls' Basketball Tournament at the Owensboro Sportscenter on Monday, March 4.

Following the loss, Butler County exited the 2023-24 girls' high school basketball season 18-14.

Setting the tone, Owensboro outscored Butler County 12-7 in the opening quarter.

Owensboro led 32-21 at halftime and remained in control throughout the second half.

Extending its lead, Owensboro led 52-27 at the end of the third quarter.

Butler County places third in state indoor track & field meet, Chambers & Smith State Champions

LOUISVILLE — Butler County placed third in the KHSAA Class 2A Indoor Track & Field State Championship at Norton Healthcare Sports & Learning Center on Saturday, March 2. 

The Bears scored 35 points and finished behind runner-up Mercer County (53) and champion Covington Catholic (68) in the 2A boys' team standings.

Bears claim 12th District Title

LEITCHFIELD — The Butler County Bears are back on top in the 12th District.

Butler County pulled away to defeat Edmonson County 79-40 in the 12th District Boys' Basketball Tournament title game at Grayson County High School on Friday, March 1.

Following the win, Butler Couty improved to 20-8.

Edmonson County dropped to 14-15 after suffering the loss.

Lady Bears capture 12th District Championship

LEITCHFIELD — Determined Butler County outlasted Grayson County 44-42 in the 12th District Girls' Basketball Tournament championship game on Thursday, Feb. 29. 

Capturing the 12th District girls' basketball title, Butler County won for the sixth time in seven games.

Butler County, under the direction of Coach Lexie Belcher, edged tournament host Grayson County 9-8 in the opening quarter.

Drake's Farm Service host "Moondog Madness" coyote hunt

First-place winners were Chris Hollman and Devin Skipworth

Drake's Farm Service held their first coyote hunt challenge, "Moondog Madness," on February 23-26. Two to three-person teams competed for prize money for the highest number of coyotes and the heaviest coyote.  

Participants turned a total of 23 coyotes. Over $1,000 in prize money was awarded.

First-place winners were Chris Hollman and Devin Skipworth. The team also turned in the heaviest coyote at 39 pounds.

Butler County outlasts Edmonson County in district tournament

LEITCHFIELD — Butler County outlasted Edmonson County 44-41 in the semifinals of the 12th District Girls' Basketball Tournament at Grayson County High School on Monday, Feb. 26.

Following the win, Butler County improved to 17-13.

 

Edmonson County ended its season 21-8 after suffering the loss. 

Butler County started strong, outscoring Edmonson County 16-10 in the opening quarter.

      The regular season has ended for KHSAA high school boys and girls basketball in the Bluegrass. The most anticipated part of the season play begins Monday, February 26th, as every district (64) total in the state.

Willoughby ranked third in Preseason Region 3 Player Rankings

MORGANTOWN — Butler County sophomore catcher/infielder/outfielder Parker Willoughby is ranked third in the Preseason Region 3 Softball Player Rankings. 

The rankings were compiled after voting was conducted among the coaches in the region. 

A longtime leader for Butler County, Willoughby excelled throughout the 2023 high school softball season. Willoughby batted .464 with 45 hits, 20 RBIs, 12 doubles, two triples and two home runs as a freshman in 2023.
