Don Locke: Lookin Thru Bifocals

The presidential election 2016:  Jeb Bush won’t make it.  He’s too short on charisma.  People look at the likeability of a candidate.  Women voters won’t elect a candidate who is not well proportioned physically. Governor Chris Christie of New Jersey is too fat.  Actress Goldie didn’t like Jery Ford.  She said, “I don’t like his buns.”  A lot of women don’t like Donald Trump’s hair style, or his “little bitty” mouth.  Ronald Reagan was popular with women, because he was “good looking”.  Hillary Clinton: She lies when the truth suits better.  However, this generation doesn’t put as much importance on honesty as folks once did.  That one is hard to call.  Then there are the so called “true believers” on both sides.  My uncle Lin Locke was one.  I once asked him: “Uncle Lin if a Republican is the best man, would you vote for him?  “No”, he said, “there is no such thing.  If he is a democrat, he is the best man.”  Right now, Ben Carson is running neck and neck with Donald Trump in the polls.  This brings us the question of how much polls count how accurate are they? Do they take the pulse of all the people?  I once had an old friend who said of political signs and posters, bumper stickers and such: “A particular candidate may have more signs out than his opponent.  But signs don’t vote.  Also money doesn’t always vote.  In the last presidential race, millionaire candidate, Steve Forbes, had enough money to burn a wet mule; he couldn’t make the grade.  On vote buying?  One old cogger said, “I’ll go ahead and take their money. Then I’ll go in that booth and vote the way I blamed want to.”  Also I don’t know how much debate will count.  Hard to say.  People watch them like they once did particularly younger voters.  A lot of young people find “politics boring”.  I do remember when presidential candidate Jimmy Carter incumbent President Jerald Ford, Ford committed a big blunder. He said, “There are no countries behind the tron curtain now”.  When in reality, there were still boo-coo European countries behind the communist wall.  This was before the Berlin Wall; fell during the Ronald Reagan presidency Carter got all our President Ford like a cheap suit. Possibly this may have been one big, of the blunders Ford made.  Ford also caved in to the big east money interests who were against U.S. oil drilling expansion, and the construction of more oil refineries.  There is still the question of the black vote.  Blacks traditionally voted Republican because Lincoln freed the slaves.  But when Democrat President Lyndon Johnson introduced the great society, thousands of blacks switched over to the Democratic Party.  They do comprise 13% of our population. But what do I know? I was fooled in the last two presidential elections.
