Cheryl Hughes: The Mom Factor

Recently, I saw a news story about a designer who had been badly burned as a child.  Linda Rowe Thomas was two years old when a kerosene heater exploded, killing her six-year-old sister and badly burning her.  She and her sister had been playing dress-up.  Linda was wearing a fur coat with the hood up, which saved her arms and torso, but her face and hands sustained third-degree burns.  The damage was extensive.  All the fingers on Linda’s left hand had to be amputated, as well as part of the fingers on her right hand.  “The doctors told my mother that I would probably not

Jarrod Jacobs: "Doctrines Not Found In the New Testament"

The word “doctrines” in our title means “teaching.” In other words, some people attribute doctrines to the New Testament that are not there. This is not a new problem. Jesus told the Pharisees that they worshiped God in vain because they taught the “commandments of men” (Matt. 15:8-9). They weren’t teaching God’s will but merely said it was God’s will. The same thing occurs today. Let us take a moment and examine what we are taught by men (I Jn. 4:1, 6). Perhaps we are being taught doctrines that are not found in the New Testament.

Jim Waters: School choice court defeat a bump in the road

Franklin Circuit Court Judge Phillip Shepherd’s ruling that the school choice bill passed earlier this year is unconstitutional is hardly a “crippling blow” – as the Courier-Journal describes it – to the commonwealth’s school choice efforts.

Considering the success school choice has had nationwide in courtrooms – especially higher courts – in recent years, the ruling likely just delays Kentucky students’ access to the kinds of better educational experiences already enjoyed in many other states.

Andy Sullivan: Against the Grain

I’ve been watching the entire series Wings on Hulu.  As of now, I’m about halfway through the final season.  In 1990, the world was introduced to “Wings”, a sitcom that predominantly took place within a small airport in Nantucket, Massachusetts.  The show followed the lives of the employees that worked there. The show dealt love, heartbreak, and misunderstandings that led to hilarious situations.

Recently ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, The CW, and other networks have updated their fall-winter program schedules. Some new programs have been included as well as many programs that were previously available. Although I don’t watch television every night, I do watch some programs – or record and watch later.

Cheryl Hughes: Unseasonably Warm

“You know what this is, don’t you,” I said to my husband, Garey.

“I know exactly what this is,” he answered.  “It is the grace of God.”

“I’ll go one step further,” I said.  “This is God has mercy on fools and little children.”

Jarrod Jacobs: "The Focal Point of The Bible"

If I were to ask you what the focal point of the entire Bible is, would you know the answer? Sometimes, folks approach the Bible with utter confusion. They have no idea what the Bible is about, nor its central theme. To some, the Bible is a jumbled collection of sixty-six books, written by men over thousands of years, that have very little to do with one another. If this is your approach to the Bible, then let this short article encourage you to change your thinking.

Jim Waters: Facts don't mesh with more-money better-education myth

No matter how persistent those claiming Kentucky doesn’t adequately fund its public education may be, they can’t escape the reality offered by the cold, hard facts in study after study on school spending.

One of the latest is Reason Foundation’s brand new report showing that not only has public-education spending increased in the Bluegrass State, but it’s also risen more than in 35 other states, including six of the seven neighboring the commonwealth.

Andy Sullivan: Against the Grain

This week, I was once again inspired by a story Steven Van Zandt relayed on his daily radio show on his Sirius channel.  The story is of Elmer Valentine, the founder of Go Go dancing and clubs. Here is his story.

Patty Craig: A Slice of Time

I heard someone say, “Don’t complain because you have to get up early every morning. The time may come when you can’t get up – period.” I believe we want to be as healthy as we can. Sometimes to do that, a change of habit is needed. I read several suggestions for a healthier life.
