Patty Craig: A Slice of Time

What does Kentucky produce? Our state has a solid agricultural base as well as manufacturing. In 2009, Kentucky ranked 28th in the U.S. based on gross state product (California was ranked first and Vermont fiftieth.), producing 156,553 million dollars in goods and services (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._states_by_GDP).

Colloquialisms are words that are sometimes changed to meet, or handle, a particular situation or task; sometimes to simplify.  a knutckhot for example, is short for nautical mile (6080ft) if a ship is doing 30 nauts (knots), it is traveling at 30 nautical miles per hour, as opposed to 30 statute miles per hour (statute mile equals only 5,280ft). The speed of military aircraft is measured in nauts (knots).

Aaron Jacobs: Points in American History

The Signers of the Declaration: On July 4, 1776, fifty-six men signed a document that would lay the foundation for the United States to begin, the Declaration of Independence. In this document, they specified at least 27 grievances that the colonists had with the British government. At this time, the signers of the Declaration were still considered British subjects, but by signing this document, they pledged their lives, fortunes, and sacred honor to the American cause.

Cheryl Hughes: Cool Ride

Today, I saw a little girl of eleven or maybe twelve get into a beat up old van and struggle to shut the door.  I remember being her when I was eleven or maybe twelve, but it wasn’t a beat up old van door I struggled with, it was an ancient car door.

Jarrod Jacobs: “Satan Works Overtime”

The Scriptures describe Satan as being active! We see Satan “going to and fro in the earth, and … walking up and down in it” (Job 1:7, 2:2), looking for a righteous man. Peter warned, “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour” (I Pet. 5:8). A lioness will wait patiently for her time to strike and kill the gazelle. In hunting, she is active and has a goal in mind. Satan is also described as being as active as a lion! Jesus said that Satan was a murderer from the beginning and the father of lies (Jn. 8:44).

Andy Sullivan: Against The Grain

Several months ago, I had my picture taken for our church yearbook-at least I think that’s what it was supposed to be.  If you don’t know, I do not like having my picture taken.  One major problem is that I have difficulty keeping my eyes open.  No, not as in I go to sleep.  I blink.  Anyone who has attempted to take my picture, let alone succeeded, will tell you that it took several snaps.  Being a photographer, I understand why you’d want to take multiple pictures.  You want options.  Of course, multiple shots of a person sometimes (always in my case) means eyes were shut in picture #1.

William Cullen Bryant referred to autumn as “the year's last, loveliest smile." Recently, a TV meteorologist said that we’re seeing summer’s last stand. Our weather has been very nice even though autumn has arrived.

Cheryl Hughes: Safety First

I wish my iron would stay on.  It won’t, of course.  Yours won’t either, unless it was purchased during the nineties.  Irons now come with a safety switch that turns the appliance off after five minutes of non-use.  And to add insult to injury, the thing constantly beeps to remind you that it is off but still plugged into the outlet.  I have the iron I bought in 1973.  It will stay on and not beep at me, but there is a short in the cord.  I’m seriously considering rewiring it.

Jarrod Jacobs: “Things Baptism Does”

Baptism is a subject that deserves our study and obedience. It is a Bible subject that is discussed often in the New Testament. What does baptism do for man? What purpose does it serve?

There are a few shows I can watch at any time; no matter how many times I’ve seen the repeats.  Big Bang Theory has quickly become one of those shows.  Another one of those shows is Seinfeld.  The show had its series finale 16 years ago, but I still watch it whenever I stumble upon it.
