1953-54 Butler County High School Bears

  The Butler Co. High School basketball team of 1953-54. We look back down memory lane seventy years ago this year of Butler Co. High School basketball history. 

       The Korean War was ending, and President Dwight D. Eisenhower was in the White House. America was locked in an era known as the Cold War with the Soviet Union, having emerged from World War II as the most powerful country in the world.

Bears roll past Raiders 86-38

MORGANTOWN — Butler County rolled past visiting Whitesville Trinity 86-38 in a 12th District boys' basketball game on Friday, Jan. 26. 

With the win, Butler County improved to 10-6 overall and 2-0 in the 12th District.

Whitesville Trinity dropped to 1-16 overall and 0-3 in the 12th District following the loss. 

Butler County thrived early, outscoring Whitesville Trinity 21-4 in the opening quarter. 

The Bears led 47-15 at halftime and continued to control the 12th District game throughout the second half.

Lady Bears level Whitesville Trinity 59-29

MORGANTOWN — Butler County pulled away to beat Whitesville Trinity 59-29 in a 12th District girls' basketball game on Friday, Jan. 26.

After registering the win, Butler County improved to 11-8 overall and 2-1 in the 12th District.

Whitesville Trinity dropped to 1-14 overall and 0-3 in the 12th District after suffering the loss.

Butler County set the tone early, outscoring Whitesville Trinity 15-7 in the opening quarter.

BOWLING GREEN — Butler County slipped into the loss column as Christ Presbyterian Academy (CPA), a team out of Nashville, prevailed 89-80 in the Gary Force Honda Clash at the Swamp at Greenwood High School on Saturday, Jan. 13.

MORGANTOWN — Lawson Rice scored 24 points to lead Butler County past Greenwood 76-49 on Tuesday, Jan. 9.

Lady Bears defeat Glasgow  56-42

MORGANTOWN — Returning to the win column, Butler County defeated Glasgow 56-42 on Monday, Jan. 8.

After registering the win over Glasgow, Butler County evened its record to 8-8. 

Starting strong, Butler County outscored Glasgow 16-6 in the first quarter.

Butler County held on to lead 24-22 at halftime. 

Extending its lead back out, Butler County led Glasgow 40-29 at the end of the third quarter.

Bears drop three-point game to St. Xavier

PADUCAH — Butler County faced a single digit deficit at the conclusion of each quarter as St. Xavier held on to win 82-79 during Mustang Madness at McCracken County High School on Saturday, Jan. 6. 

Following the loss, Butler County, which has faced one of the toughest schedules among boys' high school basketball teams in the state, dropped to 6-5. 

Moving ahead, St. Xavier outscored Butler County 25-18 in the first quarter.

St. Xavier clung to a 43-40 lead at halftime.
