SEASON PREVIEW: BCHS Bears' Basketball

Following significant losses to graduation, the 2017-18 edition of the Butler County High School Bears' basketball team will be a combination of the young and old.

"We lost a great deal of experience from last year's team - Rex Henderson, Baylee Anderson, Blake Graham, Dilan McCoy, and Kenten Flener," said BCHS head coach Calvin Dockery.  "It's hard to replace those young men."

Coach Dockery does have three players returning with varsity experience - Will Moore, Brennan Grubb, and Caleb Beasley.

"These three played extensive minutes last year and their experience will help our young kids," said Dockery.

The Bears have several high potential players in the mix - especially big guys underneath - Parker Rice and Jaden Hurt.

According to Dockery, Justin Elms and Colton Embry will provide "added depth at the guard position off the bench."

Newcomers Daltyn Havens, a senior, and freshman Leevi McMillin both will see minutes.  Rounding out the varsity roster are sophomores Zach Tutko and Maculey Hampton and freshmen Hayden Hodge, Chance Castlen, and Jordan McCrady.

Coach Dockery expects the 12th District to be competitive once again.

"The district will be very balanced and should make for some exciting games this year," said Dockery.  "Our team is continuing to get better each day and that’s what we are expecting."

Key 12th District date for Butler County this season are January 2 at Edmonson, January 5 at home vs. Grayson, January 19 at Grayson, January 26 at home vs. Edmonson, February 2 at home vs. Trinity, and February 9, at Trinity.

Butler County will also be hosting the BTN/WLBQ Christmas Tournament on December 21-22.

The Bears opened the season on a winning note this week with a 78-52 drubbing at Metcalfe County.  Butler County will be back in action tonight in a Third Region match-up at Breckinridge County.  JV will tip at 5:30 with the varsity game set for 7 p.m.  The Bears will round out the week at home on Saturday, December 2, against Thomas Nelson.  Varsity will tip at 5:30 p.m.
