Patriot Monument Dedication and Patriot Grave Markings
On Saturday, October 12, the General Richard Butler Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution along with four other area chapters of SAR and members from DAR chapters from five states including Green River and Butler County NSDAR and Green River CAR met on the lawn of the Butler County courthouse to dedicate a memorial to revolutionary war soldiers and patriotic service providers who lived, died and are buried in Butler County. These “first veterans”, which number 31, are inscribed in stone along with a listing of their state of service and rank.
The program, which was in two parts, featured the monument dedication followed by a grave marking ceremony for five of the listed patriots. During the dedication, as each of the names were called out, the courthouse lawn bell was rung once.
The marking of the graves involved the reading of a biography of each of the five patriots. Three patriots, William Beasley, Jacob Borah and Thomas Lawrence were read by a descendant. Biographies of the other two, James Cook and John C. Clark Sr., were read by General Butler chapter president Donnie Webster.
Following a floral tribute, flag folding ceremony with presentation of a flag to each grave marking descendant and a gun salute, taps was played by David Daugherty.
