Lady Bears fall to Edmonson in 12th District Tournament

Lady Bears battle for the ball.

The 12th District Tournament opened on Monday night. The Lady Bears put on their road uniforms and played the Lady Wildcats of Edmonson County in the first round of the tourney, held this year at Grayson County High School.  In a hard-fought contest, the Lady Bears came up short, losing a 58-52 decision.

The Lady Bears and Lady Wildcats played three times in the regular season with the Lady Wildcats taking two-out-of-three from the Lady Bears. Edmonson County won the most recent meeting in Morgantown 49-36 on February 3rd.

The Lady Bears opened the scoring first on Monday night with a pair of Katie Graham free throws to make the score 2-0. The Lady Wildcats responded with a run to go on top 9-2 before the Lady Bears were able to respond. Hollie Glenn was key to the ECHS run, hitting a pair of long threes along with teammate Madison Rich who hit a long three of her own. ECHS built their lead to as much as 23-14 before Shawna West shot the Lady Bears back into the game with 3 three-pointers of her own.

Madeline Drake

With less than a minute to play in the first period the Lady Bears took a one-point lead at 24-23 thanks to a pair of free throws by Madeline Drake. Coach Mike McClintic called timeout with 26 seconds in the game and ECHS in possession of the ball. ECHS scored on a made free throw to tie the game. The Lady Bears had trouble on their possession, first not running enough time off the clock, then missing their shot. The Lady Cats rebounded and scored on the other end of the floor. BCHS had enough time to put together a shot attempt, but again lost possession of the ball, this time with less than 8 seconds on the clock. The ECHS girls sprinted down the floor and hit a three-pointer to take a 30-24 lead into the locker room after a 7-0 run in just over 30 seconds to close the quarter.

BCHS was led in scoring in the first half by Shawna West with 9 points. Hollie Glenn led all scorers in the first half with 12 points. Brandi Lindsey added ten points for the Lady Wildcats.

Drake on the move

The second half opened with Glenn hitting another three pointer for the Lady Wildcats. A pair of BCHS turnovers allowed the ECHS girls to build the lead until 5 unanswered points by Allie Easley brought the score back to 35-29 before Brandi Lindsey was fouled on a three-pointer by Shawna West and went to the line for three free throws. Lindsey hit one of three to extend the lead to 7 with 3 minutes to go in the third. The teams traded empty trips with the Lady Bears before Easley hit a short jumper to break the mutual scoring drought. Moments later Katie Graham made the score 38-33 with a jumper, but was answered by another Glenn 3-pointer, making the score 41-33. Madeline Drake made one of two free throws with less than 30 seconds in the third period, but Chloe Flener corralled the rebound, hit the put-back, and made her free throw off a foul to make the score 41-39 with only seconds in the quarter. Hannah Clemmons hit a layup as the quarter closed to make the score 43-39.

Shawna West & Allie Easley

Shawna West opened the fourth period with her fourth 3-point field goal of the game to make the score 43-42 with over seven minutes left in the game. ECHS slowed the pace of their offensive game to open the period as momentum seemed to have shifted to the Bears. Shawna West drove thru the lane after an empty ECHS possession and hit a left-handed layup and was fouled. West missed the free throw, but BCHS still had their first lead since near the end of the first half at 44-43. Moments later ECHS retook the lead with a pair of free throws from Madison Rich. Then a turnover and layup from Lindsey extended the lead to 47-44 with 5:35 to go in the game.

Both teams struggled at the free throw line for the next several possessions. BCHS cut the lead to just a basket off a West free throw at 47-45. The Lady Bears then put up a defensive stand punctuated by a West steal, but the Lady Wildcats stole the ball back almost immediately and ran out to an easy layup to make the lead 49-45 with three minutes to play in the game.

Allie Easley

Coach Christy Clark called timeout after the basket to settle her young Lady Bears. Madeline Drake tried an entry pass to Kashosha Turner moments later, but missed. The fight for the ball went to BCHS on the jump ball. The Lady Bears were bailed out moments later when their miss went out of bounds off an ECHS defender. With 2:21 to go Allie Easley hit a long jumper to make the score 49-47. Hollie Glenn hit a layup to extend the lead back, then West hit one of two free throws to 51-48. The Lady Bear defense forced the Lady Wildcats to take a timeout with 1:34 remaining in the game.

Coming out of the timeout the Lady Bears tightened the defense as the clock wound under a minute and a half to play. Hollie Glenn hit one of two free throws to extend the lead to 4 with 1:12 to go. Madeline Drake then drove the basket for a layup, but was whistled for the offensive foul. The foul was Drake’s fifth, and gave the ball back to ECHS with 54-seconds to play. Paige Carnes, injured for much of the season, hit two free throws to run the lead to 54-48 with 42-seconds to play.

Kasosha Turner

Coach Clark took another time out with her team down six and the season on the line. Katie Graham made a basket to make the score 54-50. Brandi Lindsey put the game away with two free throws at 34 seconds remaining to make the score 56-50. Paige Carnes fouled Katie Graham with less than 30 seconds to play. Graham hit both free throws to make the lead four points at 56-52. Madison Rich fouled on the inbounds, but Easley was unable to convert the shot with 18 seconds remaining. Taylor Miller was fouled on the rebound and hit one of two free throws to extend the lead to 5 at 57-52. BCHS missed a wide open layup with the rebound going to ECHS. Taylor Miller was fouled again with 5 seconds to play. Miller hit one of the free throws to run the score to 58-52. BCHS was unable to score again and the clock expired on the game, and the Lady Bears’ season with the final score 58-52.

The Lady Bears were led in scoring by Shawna West with 16 points. Katie Graham was the only other Lady Bear in double figures with 12 points. Hollie Glenn led all scorers with 20 for the Lady Wildcats. Brandi Lindsey added 17 for ECHS. The Lady Wildcats will face the Lady Cougars of Grayson County High School in the championship game on Thursday night. BCHS closes the season with a final record of 4-24.

The season record doesn't reflect the success this young team has had this season. I have never been so proud of a group of young ladies. They have played hard every game never giving up and always fighting to the end. The lessons learned through this game will be lessons that they will carry with them for a lifetime, and I hope that everyone of them can find something positive to take away from the season. Not only do I coach some of these ladies but I am also their biggest fan. Congrats on a job that you all did to the best of your abilities.
I agree with you Angie. They are hard workers and very dedicated.
