Beef Cattle Demonstration at Butler County Field Day – Sept 6th

By: Greg Drake II, County Extension Agent for Agriculture and Natural Resources

There will be a demonstration and discussion about dealing with animals that die on the farm at this year’s Extension Field Day.  Dr. Steve Higgins, from the University of Kentucky, will be in Morgantown to discuss how farmers can compost dead animals on their farm.  Currently, when animals die on farms, farmers must bury their animals or have them rendered.  The rendering companies no longer pick up dead animals on the farm.  This has driven UK researchers to develop an on farm composting system.  There are several steps farmers should take to make the system work well.  Dr. Higgins will go over the process, discuss the needed materials, and answer any questions that farmers have about dead animal composting.  There will be lots of other good information, displays, and demonstrations at the field day so make plans to attend.  The field day is Thursday, September 6th at the Ag. Expo Building located in the Morgantown City Park at 4 p.m.  There is no charge to attend and a meal will be provided at the end of the event.
