Bears Baseball picks up first win of the season in the South Warren Leadoff Classic

Over the weekend the BCHS Bears traveled to South Warren High School for the South Warren Leadoff Classic Tournament. The Bears faced-off against Allen County-Scottsville, South Warren, and Hancock County.

Friday’s match-up saw BCHS playing the ACS Patriots. The Patriots came ready to fight, scoring 5 runs in the first inning of play. Despite the tough first inning, the Bears only allowed one run the rest of the contest; however, the Bears offense was unable to answer at the plate, only scoring 1 run. BCHS Sophomore left-hander Caleb Hunt took the loss on the mound. Leading the way at the plate for the Bears was sophomore Tyler Johnson, who 3-3 on the day with a double.

Bears head coach Kevin Winn felt that despite the loss, the team showed improvement. "Even though it was a tough loss, we played six good innings of baseball after giving up 5 runs in the first," said Winn, "We played much better defensively, and did not have a single error. We just weren’t able to string enough hits together at the plate."

Saturday morning the Bears faced the host team, the South Warren Spartans. Senior southpaw Steven White toed the rubber for Butler County. The bats were still silent for the Bears who were shut out at the plate, only posting one hit. The lone hit came from outfielder Blake Graham. The Bears suffered a 6-0 loss in their first game of the day.

The second game of the Saturday doubleheader was against Region 3 foe, the Hancock County Hornets. The BCHS bats came alive for the second game. In the first inning the Bears scored 4 runs to take the early 4-0 lead on Hancock County. The Bears never looked back after taking this early lead. Senior Dillen White led the charge for the Bears throwing 6 innings on the mound, and helping himself at the plate with two hits. Senior Cole Tynes closed out the final inning on the mound, helping to give the Bears an 8-6 victory, and their first win of the season.

Coach Winn felt that the senior leadership was critical to the win saying, “Dillen White came out and battled on the mound and at the plate. The leadership by Dillen, Cole Tynes, and Steven White was a big part of our success on Saturday. Hancock is a very good ball club and this was a huge win for our program.”

The Bears have a busy week ahead of them.  They play 7 games in 6 days with a home varsity/JV contest against Warren Central on Monday, a varsity game at Metcalfe County on Tuesday, a varsity/JV doubleheader at Grayson County on Thursday, and a varsity doubleheader at Davidson Academy in Nashville, TN on Saturday. BCHS will face the home team Davidson on Saturday along with a game against Murray, KY.

Coach Winn said, “This week will be a big week for us because we will be playing against some very good competition.”

The Grayson County game will be the district opener for the Bears for the 2012 season. The match-up against Davidson Academy will be the first time the two schools have played in BCHS program history.
