B.C.H.S. Cheerleaders Headed to State
The Butler County High School Cheerleaders competed at the 3rd Region Kapos Cheerleading Competition on Saturday, January 7. The competition took place at Owensboro High School, and featured schools from around the 3rd Region. BCHS competed in the large varsity division, where squads must have 17-20 cheerleaders. There are seven divisions at Kapos competitions, and squads are divided depending on how many cheerleaders are on the team, if the squad is co-ed, and which type of routine they want to perform.
Butler County Middle School performed at the competition as an exhibition team, one of several exhibition teams from the area. The BCMS squad is coached by Amy Smith-Thomas and Kay Romans.
BCHS Cheerleaders won the large varisty division which qualifies them to compete at the Kapos State-at-Large competition, held at Western Kentucky University on February 18 (time TBA). Seniors Jailyn Oaks and Raven Brooks were both recognized for their academic achievement. To receive this award, the cheerleader must be a senior and have a cumulative GPA of 3.3 or higher.
Kapos is the governing body of cheerleading in the state of Kentucky as set forth by the Kentucky High School Athletic Association. This competition is equivalent to a sports team competing in post-season play.
