BCHS Baseball: 2013 Season Preview

The Butler County Bears baseball team will be back in action for their 2013 campaign beginning against McLean County at 12:00 P.M. on Saturday, March 9 at the Butler County Baseball Complex.  The 2013 season marks the second under head coach Kevin Winn.

Seniors Keston Flener, Carrington Harpe, and Elijah Flener

The Bears have a mix of older players and younger’s players that will see action this season.  Returning seniors Keston Flener and Carrington Harpe look to anchor down the infield with experience.  Elijah Flener, who is a senior, will play for the Bears this season in a multitude of positions and looks to add a spark to the lineup offensively.  Coach Winn is pleased with the leadership these three seniors have provided so far: “I think we have a good group of older guys that really provide guidance and experience to the younger players on the team.”

Caleb Hunt and Clark Parker are the two juniors for the Bears who both started all 31 games last season.  8th grader Blake Graham will be returning and looks to improve on his team leading batting average of .360 in 2012.

The 2013 schedule has many familiar teams such as Logan County, Russellville, Warren Central, Muhlenberg County, Greenwood, and Ohio County.  New to the schedule is a wood bat tournament at Shelby County High School during Spring break April 4-6 where the Bears will face off against Rowan County and Shelby County with a third team TBA.  Other teams added that were not played in 2012 are Breckenridge County, Todd County, University Heights, and Dawson Springs. The second weekend of the season, March 15-16, the Bears will once again play in the South Warren Lead-off Classic where they will clash against South Warren, Allen County, and Owensboro.  On April 24 the Bears will travel to play at WKU against Davidson Academy (Nashville, TN) with the first pitch scheduled at 6:00 P.M, and will finish up regular season play at the Bowling Green Hot Rods stadium with a 11:00 match-up against Allen County on May 18.

Winn is excited about this year’s team and is looking forward to getting started: “this group of guys has been extremely enjoyable to coach so far this spring.  We have great team chemistry that I think will be very evident out on the baseball field.  They are just a fun group to be around.”
