Andy Sullivan: Against the Grain/Kindle Spirits

I thought about calling this “Fire Down Below” but decided against it.  I received my Kindle Fire this past Christmas.  As much as I consider myself a techno-geek or maybe just a geek in general, I wouldn’t give into getting a Kindle or iPod.  Now I have both! Recently I thought, why not a top ten list of why a Kindle is better than a book”? So, here we go.

10) When you hit the power button to turn on your Kindle, you are met with several options.  The tabs at the top of the screen from which you have to choose are: Newsstand, Books, Music, Video, Docs, Apps, Web.  Go in the books section and you will see the books you have purchased, an Oxford Dictionary, IMBD, Pulse, etc.  Click on the Pulse tab and you’ll get headlines from USA Today, Popular Science, among others.  There is Pandora where you can create your own radio stations for your listening pleasure.  I immediately made a Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers station.

9) You can view movie trailers on your Kindle. These include new releases, upcoming releases, New on Blu-ray and DVD, Best Picture winners, etc.

8) There is a user’s guide located on the Kindle.  Everything you need to know, you can find it here.

7) You can purchase television shows and movies for as low as $4.00

6) Comics, ESPN, the weather channel, Words with Friends-all those apps and more are included on the Kindle.

5) These last few reasons will be what I like about Kindle.  I was blown away by the touch screen. You basically touch and click whatever book you’d like.  While reading, you turn pages by taking your finger to the right-hand corner.  You move your finger to the left across the touch screen, and the page turns.

4) The books are much cheaper on Kindle.  I purchased the Drew Brees book (released August 17, 2011) for $8.99.  I would’ve paid at least $17.00 in a book store.

5) I’ve yet to do this, but you can read magazines on Kindle.  Say you were away on vacation, business trip or whatever and you’re missing your favorite magazine.  It’s sitting in the mailbox at home, but that doesn’t help you now does it? You can go to the magazine tab and click on it, and viola: your favorite magazine at your disposal

6) You can import addresses from your address book onto your Kindle.

7) The Kindle is so portable that you can stick it in your overnight bag and go.

8) Take your plug-in cord, though.  You don’t want to be caught somewhere and the battery is almost dead.  Don’t worry, you can read while it charges.

9) The Kindle opens like a book, ironically.  It has a cover you can strap on for safety and once you open, there is a slot for papers.  This comes in handy, as you will be asked to come up with a password for your Kindle.  Most can probably recall them from memory but I have to write these things down.  You will also need a Pandora password, should you choose to activate Pandora (which I highly recommend for music lovers such as myself).

10) Perhaps most importantly, once you finish a book, you are not left with the thought, “Well I’ve read this book, now it’s just going to sit here, take up space and collect dust.  That was actually one of the driving reasons behind getting a Kindle.
At this point, I think almost every house in my neighborhood has a Kindle.  If you don’t, I’m sure you know someone who does.  They are very handy and I would encourage you to invest your money in one.  Wouldn’t you rather pay about $10 for a book instead of close to $20?
