Andy Sullivan: Against the Grain/CMA Awards

Wednesday, November 9 was the 45th annual CMA Awards in Nashville.  There were funny moments such as hosts Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood playing onstage with Tim McGraw and Faith Hill Barbie’s. There were surprising performances, such as Zac Brown Band as they performed the late Ray Charles’ “Georgia on My Mind”, and Lionel Ritchie teaming with Rascal Flatts and Darius Rucker. Also, Faith Hill made her triumphant return by performing her first new song in 4 years called “Come Home”.
The newest power couple of Country music, Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert, won Male and Female Vocalist, respectively.  Taylor Swift set Facebook ablaze with disapproval moments after winning Entertainer of the Year.  Something tells me people are a little bit tired of her.  Obviously the awards committees aren’t. After winning, she said “I’m so happy right now! Thanks to all the fans that filled up those stadiums and arenas all over the world this year.  This is amazing”!
After her big win, Miranda Lambert said “I’m very, very humbled to be standing in front of these amazing females who deserve it more than I do”.  Two-time male vocalist Blake Shelton said “I really didn’t prepare anything at all.  I didn’t think y’all would let me get away with this two times.” New Artist winner Band Perry promised to keep working hard to earn the award.  Vocal Group winner Lady A and Vocal Duo winner Sugarland were both appreciative to the fans, with Sugarland remembering those in the Indiana State Fair stage collapse.
Jason Aldean’s “My Kind Of Party” was the surprise winner for Album of the Year.  He took another ward, Musical Event with Kelly Clarkson for their duet “Don’t You Wanna Stay”.  Video of the year went to “You and Tequila” by Kenny Chesney and Grace Potter.  This award is given to the director, Shaun Silva in this case, who thanked his wife, friends, Kenny and Grace.  Guitarist Mac McAnally, musician of the year, said “I don’t even know if I belong in the same phone book as these guys I’m nominated with, but I’m mighty grateful”.
My two favorite performances of the night were Zac Brown Band paying tribute to Ray Charles, and their mutual home state, by singing the classic “Georgia” and the Glen Campbell tribute by Keith Urban, Vince Gill and Brad Paisley.  They even brought Glen on stage at the end of the performance.  All in all, it was a pretty good awards show.

Are all American's Tone Deaf?? One of my kids commented the other night when Taylor Swift started to sing on the CMA's that "she doesn't perform very well live." Could it be because she can't carry a tune in a five gallon bucket? Now I am not a country music fan by any stretch of the imagination, but she is no singer. If she had won songwriter of the year, ok. Best electronically pitch tuned album of the year, you got it. Entertainer of the Year to someone who "doesn't perform very well, live"? Girl you know it's true. (Yes that's a Milli Vanilli reference. Google it.)
