Andy Sullivan: Against the Grain

Several days ago, a journalist friend of mine posted a link to Facebook of something I found quite humorous, yet mostly true.  The name of the article was Five Things You Should Know Before Dating a Journalist.  The article was written by Tom Chambers. For the ladies out there who have been eyeing that good looking guy in the beechtree sweatshirt at the corner of this column, consider these five points.

1) We can figure things out.  We are paid to dig deep.  If you’re hiding something, cheating on us, or anything else, you better tell.  I mean, we will find out eventually.  Or maybe, we already know…

2) At some point, you will be a topic.  Whether feature story or opinion column, something you do or say will end up being the subject of our writing.  We write about life.  You are an important part of our life.  Therefore, you will most likely appear in a column.  Get over it.

3) Yes, we think we’re smarter than you.  In fact, we know it.  Sure, it smacks of ego.  However, chances are good that is what makes your heart go crazy, more than likely.  We have a strong, working knowledge of how the world works and we (especially me) aren’t afraid to tell you about it.

4) You’re not less important than the job-the job is just more important than anything else.  Journalism isn’t just a 9-5 occupation.  We bring our work home and will drop what we’re doing-even if it’s with you-to cover a story.  Stop a person in the street for a comment? Sure, we’ll do that.  Looking for an afternoon date? Let me do work and then we’ll get together.

5) The fifth and final thing you should know before dating a journalist: You won’t be disappointed! We journalists are intense, driven, passionate folks.  We carry these attributes into our relationship.  Our lives are never boring and each day is different.
Pitfalls scare you away? Well, (R1) the fact that we’re inquisitive means we’ll listen to you.  (R2)The fact that we write about you means you are important in our life.  (R3) Ever date a person and find they have nothing to say? That will not happen dating a journalist.  (R4) Date me, and you’ll be with a driven guy.  There you have it, five things you should know before dating a journalist.  Oh yes, the fifth and most important thing you should know: I’m single!
