Andy Sullivan: Against the Grain

The modern summer blockbuster began in 1975, when Steven Spielberg made us(well, not me because I was 4 years away from being born)scared to go into the water thanks to Jaws.  Since then, Spielberg has dominated the summer movie seasons with movies like Raiders of the Lost Ark and Jurassic Park.  As of last year, since there was no summer movie season, here are the top 10 highest-grossing summer movies of all time. According to www.businessinsider.com

Raiders of the Lost Ark comes in at #10.  Released June 12, 1981, the movie originally grossed $248 million domestically and $390 million worldwide.  Jurassic World clocks in at #9.  Released June 12, 2015, the movie originally grossed $652.2 million domestically.  Original worldwide gross was $1.67 billion.  Coming in at #8 is Jurassic Park.  Released June 11, 1983, the movie’s original domestic gross $402.8million.  Original worldwide growth was $1.03 billion.

We come back to the Star Wars franchise for #5 with 1983’s Return of the Jedi.  Released May 25, 1983, this blockbuster had an original domestic growth of $309.3 million and worldwide gross of $475 million.  Coming in at #4 is Empire Strikes Back.  Released June 20, 1980, this classic netted $290.2 million domestically and $548 million worldwide.  Steven Spielberg’s 1982 classic E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial comes in at #3.  Released June 11, original domestic gross was $435.1 million.  Original worldwide gross was $793.5 million.

Just outside the top spot (doesn’t this make me sound like a DJ) is Jaws.  Released June 20, 1975, the original domestic gross was $260 million.  Original worldwide gross was $471.2 million.  Another Steven Spielberg production takes the top spot, and once again it’s Star Wars.  The original Star Wars, released on May 25, 1977 takes the top spot.  The movie originally domestically grossed $461 million.  Original worldwide gross was $775.5 million.
