Andy Sullivan: Against the Grain

Christmas-time is here… The Christmas season is upon us.  From decking the halls, to buying gifts, to fixing and mailing Christmas cards, this is certainly a busy and fun time of year.  One of the staples of this season is Christmas parades.  In my opinion, the best parades are small-town parades.
County dignitaries ride in the parades. Miss Butler County, Calendar Girl, and various other clubs are part of the parade line-up.  This year the Morgantown Christmas parade is this Saturday at 2 p.m.  The Quality Christmas parade is December 10 at 1 p.m.  “Christmas Is”….is the Morgantown parade theme and “Christmas To Remember” is the Quality parade theme.
When I was a kid, the Christmas parade always signified the beginning of the Christmas season.  Several years ago, Quality began having a Christmas parade.  That has been a welcome addition to the Christmas tradition parades offer.  I remember always being hyped up for the candy that would be thrown out to the crowd.  If I left with both jacket pockets and jean pockets full of candy, I considered it a good haul.  When it was really cold, I had an American Eagle jacket with multiple pockets.  I could fit A LOT of candy in those!
Memories like that, among others, are what the parades are about. Seeing all the floats, the marching band, Shriners, and all the other participants is pretty cool.  One year, I was even in the parade.  It was either FFA or the former FCCLA, which was actually FHA when I was in school.  See how old I am? Haha!
Hopefully there are big crowds at both parades.  See you at the parades!
